L-Tryptophan is an essential
amino acid that aids in protein
synthesis and is a precursor to many
compounds, including the neurotransmitter
serotonin. Serotonin, acting as a
neurotransmitter in the Central Nervous
System(CNS), affects hunger, mood,
aggression and promotes sleep. The body
can also metabolize serotonin into
melatonin. Low levels of serotonin,
whether caused by improper uptake or
metabolism, may contribute to
sleeplessness or insomnia. Supplementing
with L-Tryptophan can help restore
normal serotonin levels. |

GABA is the chief inhibitory
neurotransmitter in the body, which
means that it regulates neuronal
excitability. In so doing, GABA promotes
relaxation and may dampen anxiety. It
also has an analgesic effect.
Sleeplessness has a variety of causes,
stress, anxiety and pain being main
contributors. By promoting relaxation
and pain relief, GABA can help one get
to sleep. |

Melatonin is a natural substance
secreted by the pineal gland. Melatonin
is recognized as a key element in
regulating the body's day/night
metabolic rates. Its secretion is
synchronized with our biological clock
which dictates the daily changes upon
the body's metabolic activity: our
circadian rhythms. One of its most
popular uses is to help alleviate jet
lag, i.e. to restore proper sleep
patterns.
Other bonuses of melatonin: melatonin is also an excellent antioxidant,
it supports heart health and the immune
system.
Often, sleeplessness is caused by
aberrations in one's sleeping schedule,
for instance, jet lag, frequent
nighttime urination (in men, due to
enlarged prostate), night-shift working
hours. The body and mind may be so
exhausted that an individual, no matter
how fatigued, may have trouble falling
and staying asleep. Melatonin can be
helpful in restoring a proper 7-8 hour
regenerative sleep cycle. (Melatonin
is sourced from bovine pineal gland) |
